Lush Veganese Conditioner

Veganese Conditioner Review

Initial Thoughts

I’ve stayed away from Veganese conditioner as people always refer to it as a light conditioner for those that have somewhat fine hair. They said it wasn’t overly conditioning so it wouldn’t weigh hair down. I always assumed that I needed to use a somewhat moderate to heavy conditioner as I straighten my hair daily and need all the repair and nourishment I can get.

I came to try Veganese conditioner after getting the Head Case Volume and Shine kit. I first used it in conjunction with Big shampoo, which also came in the kit (since then I’ve paired it with Ultimate Shine, Rehab and Trichomania and have had phenomenal results with each).

Lush says:

The majority of LUSH products are vegan, but making a vegan conditioner without lanolin took us a few years. Absolutely refusing to be beaten, Helen Ambrosen finally found a formula that reached her high standards. Agar is really softening and conditions the hair follicles.

Using agar seaweed gel as a hair softener, she created a perfect vegan conditioner with lavender and lemons for shine. Vegans and everyone with fine hair should choose this one and stick with it.

One of the first things you’ll notice about Veganese is the fantastic lemon smell, akin to a Lemonhead candy: lemony and sweet. The scent is not overbearing at all. Application is fantastic as it gives you a very similar feeling to “the ‘cone slip” (the slippery smooth feeling you get when you use conditioner that has silicone). A little bit goes a long way and this is partially due to the great texture.

As I mentioned in the Soak and Float review, I have a finicky scalp. Sometimes it’s itchy, sometimes it feels dry, etc. The combination of lavender and rosemary in this conditioner really helped to calm it down.

I was surprised at how smooth and soft my hair felt after I used it. I did notice that it was a bit shinier as well. It performed better than every Lush conditioner I’ve used so far (Jungle as a solid and cream, American Cream and Coolaulin) with the exception of Retread. Not only did it soothe my scalp but helped my hair feel more manageable and look better .

One thing to note: my hair falls into the fine to normal range and the consistency of Veganese is appropriate. If you have normal to coarse hair you may want to stick with something a little heavier such as Retread or Jungle. It’s always worth a try though so don’t be afraid to ask for a sample the next time you’re at a Lush shop.
